Here comes another status update!
Things have been crazy with the app development but fear not, things are looking very good. A lot of bugs have been ironed out and a lot of the framework has been recoded to work faster and use less memory. With a standard wi-fi connection a friend list of 580 friends loads in 2-4 seconds.
Mentioning loading, it is important to mention that the app caches most of your actions unless you explicitly ask it to refresh. For example, if you retrieve a feed snapshot and you move on to something else, when you come back to the feed, it will load instantly so you don’t have to wait. To retrieve new data, just hit the ‘MENU’ button and ‘REFRESH’. Same thing applies to your friends list. If it loads, it will be available to you for the rest of your session, unless you quit the whole app.
On to the next feature. Notifications! A very important feature on facebook and a must-have in a mobile app. People always want to know about upcoming events they are invited, today’s birthdays and also if new comments were posted to their posts. The first version will support all three types of notifications. Your notifications will load instantly upon login. From there, you can instantly RSVP or view a persons profile to wish them happy birthday. You can see some screenshots below.
I have also done a lot of work on the photos and albums section. When you first ask to see your photos, or someone elses photos, you will be shown all the albums. The first album you will always see is “All Photos” which includes photos a user has been tagged by others (just like on facebook photos (the top part)). To move to the next page, you fling to the left or to the right. You do not have to wait for the next page to load before you move on to the next. You can keep flinging to the requested page. For the popular people that have at least 300+ pictures I have implemented a long press anywhere on the window that shows a “Page Jump” dialog. Type in the number you want to go (or guess?) and hopefully you will find what you are looking for. Future versions will implement filtering and searching of photos.
Quite a few people asked me to go directly to the feed instead of the home page. This is now implemented in the preferences menu. If you enable this, after you start the application it will instantly go to the feed for you.
Before I log out, what about the release date? Considering the progress lately, I think the first version will be available at the end of June or beginning of July. There is always room for improvement and considering the nature of the app a lot needs to be done to ensure that you enjoy it and I am trying to hard for this!
